The Poet
(Amedyaz)

The poet started to write
a beautiful poem
where he said:
"Honesty had deserted the people.
There is not one of them
to compensate for the other.
But if you pose the question,
each one claims to be so perfect
that it would make you happy.
When I myself seek,
without finding where he hides himself,
the honest man."

Those who listened to the poem
are indignant, and demanded
of the poet that it be rewritten.
The poet returned to his writing,
reworking the poem so it says:
"We do not know where to go.
The doors are made of iron
when we open one of them,
two are closed again
we were born at the bad time.
Do we deserve it?
No aberration saved us.
Even words lose their direction.
We are broken by disorder.
We suffer.
Women, come to our help!"

Those who listened to the poem
are indignant, and demanded
of the poet that it be rewritten.
The poet returned to his writing,
reworking the poem so it says:
"We don’t know if we are at war,
or if we are at peace,
who strikes and who is struck.
When there is no agreement,
no one recognizes the other.
It is might (power) which intervenes;
rifles on all sides
and us in the middle
with our empty hands."

Those who listened to the poem
are indignant, and demanded
of the poet that it be rewritten.
The poet returned to his writing,
reworking the poem so it says:
"We appoint those to govern us,
but if our judgements were correct we would say:
'We merit our governance'
It is we who leave the field free to all their whims,
thus deserving the blows which result from it.
Well done, we are in the wrong
to have given to those who would strikes us
a good stick (to beat us with)."

Those who listened to the poem
are indignant, and demanded
of the poet that it be rewritten.
The poet now being annoyed,
threw away all his poems.
For the sake of peace
he started to write new poems, where it says:
"The days are happy,
the people are good,
you would be well-satisfied with less than that.
The flowers have blossomed
everyone has a ball,
beat the drum Alilouche! 1"

People are honest
we have always said that.
The negative subject (negativity)
does not have its place in this world.
All is for the best,
beat the drum Alilouche!
The days are happy,
the people are good,
you would be well-satisfied with less than that.
The flowers have blossomed
everyone has a ball,
beat the drum Alilouche !

Upstanding, well-balanced
we overcome any problem.
When one iron door closes again
we open two of them.
We deserve the best
join the dance, women!
The days are happy,
the people are good,
you would be well-satisfied with less than that.
The flowers have blossomed
everyone has a ball,
beat the drum Alilouche !

Amongst us, no one attacks the other,
we are all brothers.
Prepare the festival
we rejoice in the peace,
load the rifles for us 2
The days are happy,
the people are good,
you would be well-satisfied with less than that.
The flowers have blossomed
everyone has a ball,
beat the drum Alilouche !

You who govern us,
come rejoice with us
you are tired out
by your work for us.
Today, happy,
you have a ball with us!
The days are happy,
the people are good,
you would be well-satisfied with less than that.
The flowers have blossomed
everyone has a ball,
beat the drum Alilouche !

1diminutive form of Ali
2ie to fire shots of celebration.
